We gotta break it down. There has got to be some way to give The Lord more of our hearts, minds, and lives in this busy-busy, over-stimulated world. I have spoke a lot on this before and, as I have continued to seek Jesus and pray, it seems that the answer is always the same: give Me more of you, and I will give you more of Me. Or at least something very close to that.
This is all about our time. How much will we give to Him? Are we willing to restructure or reorganize our lives around the statements of Jesus Christ???
Take NO thought for your life.
Forsake ALL that you have.
Sell ALL that you have.
Let the dead bury their own dead.
PRAY WITHOUT CEASING….
Absolute Surrender (Andrew Murray)
And these are just a few. Part of being a young, wet-behind-the-ears pastor, is convincing or leading people to the point of giving God more. I can usually only speak from experience after the Word has already been so clear on these type of topics and we have been faithful to TEACH it. Now, the hard part, we must be faithful, as well, to LIVE it.
Here’s how it usually goes:
Disciple: How do I spend more time with The Lord? How do I get more?
Me: Get up earlier. Pray. Read the Word every day.
Disciple: But I’m not a morning person….
Me: Pray for God to give you the desire.
Disciple: I tried…it’s too hard…my mind wanders.
Me: That happens to everybody, keep at it! Pray for strength.
Disciple: I can’t focus when I read, Satan distracts me…my flesh won’t keep it’s attention on what I read. I get frustrated.
Me: So do I! When you can’t read…stop and pray. Try again. If that doesn’t work, go on a walk and pray…and get your blood pumping. If that doesn’t work, sing. If that doesn’t work, get some solid teaching on MP3 or tape and pump that into your ears until something kicks in. If even that doesn’t work, listen to worship music and cry to the Lord for help in time of need. If all this is too much, stop. Pray again. Then rinse and repeat.
Disciple: Whoa, that’s a lot…..
Me: Are you really willing and determined to get your time with your God? If you are, one of these things is going to get some results. You need to keep asking, seeking, and knocking…He will answer and speak. He loves those that diligently seek Him, He IS attentive to their cries for help.
Obviously, we all need this. We have got to keep at it. Our excuses are usually ridiculously lame. We DO have time! We can get out of bed! We have got to seek The Lord while He is to be found. He will meet us and help us develop focus, hunger, excitement, understanding, strength, and regiment…to name a few.
Let’s keep at it!
