The Book of Job: Introduction & Themes

About two months ago, the Lord started knocking on my door to teach through the Book of Job on Sunday mornings. Reluctantly, I sought confirmation and it came several times in several ways…this is not a book to be taken lightly. And now, as many in our fellowship are in all kinds of trials and transition, we seem to need this book. Come Adonai, and give us a greater vision of WHO You are.

The Book of Job

INTRODUCTION:

Poetical book (ancient Hebrew poetic form), first in the Bible. Personal, not national. Emotional, making it more personal. Here we get the HEART of what’s going on instead of just a history account or narrative. This book can be read very much like Psalms.

Ancient of Books: Many people think that Job was a contemporary of Abraham…making it the oldest revelation of God. Only the first 11 chapters of Genesis Pre-date this.

Job lived 140 years after his calamities—to roughly 210. Abe’s dad lived to 205, Abraham was a bit younger.

His wealth was marked in livestock.

Sabeans and Chaledeans was described here as nomadic tribes and were later nations.

No references to the Mosaic law. No tabernacles, mention of the exodus, priests, lawful sacrifices…or other things.

Job was a gentile. And so are we….

JOB’S TRIALS…were REAL!

This book is NOT religious fiction as many think it is. James says he was a real person, and the prophet Ezekiel (14:14). James 5:11 “You have heard of the perseverance of Job….”

THEMES:

God is worthy of our trust even if we can’t understand his doings in our lives.

Satan tries to call God on the carpet…that His people only follow Him because of what they get from Him and not for who He is, relationship.

We should rest in the fact that we don’t know more than Him or even as much as Him, instead of fight that fact.

God never explains the WHY of these events in JOB’S life.

WE WALK BY FAITH AND NOT BY EXPLANATION.

GOD WILL ALWAYS GIVE US ADEQUATE REASON TO WALK BY FAITH, BUT NEVER TOO MUCH so that WE STILL WALK BY FAITH.

NOT AN EXPLANATION, BUT THE GREATEST NEED, for the believer, IS A GREATER VISION OF GOD.

Job’s character was shown in having only one wife, and had his 10 kids by one wife. Upstanding.

Job is rich in character, reputation, godliness, family, and material.

Satan accuses us to the Father, day and night, before the throne.

The devil isn’t omni-anything. He is a FINITE being. The Devil has no equality with God.

So, Yahweh, show us Your infinite wisdom.
