I am being removed from the equation.
“May I decrease and may He increase.” This is the simple yet firm statement of the man that gets out of God’s way. As I continue into the sixth day of this fast, I feel that I am being exhorted and led to let more go and become less. Some of this exhortation has come through other brothers going through the 21-Day squeeze, or fast, with me. But other exhortations are coming through the still, small Voice and through the legacies of Evan Roberts and Leonard Ravenhill.
Evan Roberts was just one of the dozens of men used mightily by the Holy Spirit to revive God’s Bride in Wales around the turn of the century…not this last one, but 1900. Anyway, Roberts was so utterly and totally gripped by the Holy Ghost, that he rarely allowed his picture to be taken and didn’t usually announce when he would be speaking or at what church because he wanted to make sure that the Lord was leading the people and that they were not attracted to him or his personality. Many times, this 26 year-old young man would sit and pray in the front row for hours before he would start a meeting…and then would only preach or teach for fifteen minutes! But oh how the Spirit of the Living God moved in tidal waves across that country. What an example of giving God the glory….
Leonard Ravenhill was a fiery Englishman who moved to America for the last third of his life and ministry and decried the woes and sin in the American Church. His words pierced like heavenly darts and he spoke often of the need for prayer, the necessity of truly knowing God, and a coming and great Awakening. And the man taught holiness, pure and clean. He reeked of the fear of God and spent a good six hours a day with the Lord in prayer and sometimes much more. You can hear and see audio and video sermons that he taught, even on YouTube, and every time I partake, I am physically shaken at his command and authority…and a heathy humility as well. He was fond of saying that he wanted to be one of the ten most wanted men in hell. Why would anyone say that!!!
Like Moody, Spurgeon, Whitefield, Wesley, Tozer and many, many others…these brothers moved with danger and abandon. Ravenhill said that it’s fine when you want to walk in the Lord’s goodness and peace…everyone will love you, but when you pursue holiness and zealousness, you will be called a madman.
Well, sign me up. I think our country needs holy and zealous madmen for the Gospel. Men who know enough of the fear of God to never rob Him, cheat Him, or take from His rightful Glory. Lord Jesus of Nazareth, help me to be one of these men…because I want this generation to see fire come form heaven, yes, holy flame from a Holy God. I petition you my Master, please send a revival that I couldn’t contain or slap my name on and even if I were to try…my hands would get burnt clean off. Come Lord Jesus Come…and bring fire in Your wake!!!
